TV-Commerce (television-driven purchases and TV-shops) and contextual advertising is the actual evolution of the Connected TVs. TV-Commerce engages users instantly, through their home comfort and living room. With just one click in the remote control, users can order their goods and receive them at their door.

Brands can leverage SmartTV technology and TV-Commerce to drive consumer actions that include purchase, donation, and calls-to-action campaigns. TV-shops open up new opportunities for deploying omni-platforms that are interactive and accountable in a cost-effective way. Many brands are delighted about the level of interactivity and engagement that TV-Commerce solutions carry.

A survey which has been conducted by Delivery Agent Inc and polled more than 1.100 active online entertainment shoppers in mid2013, depicts some valuable findings concerning the impact of TV-commerce to SmartTV users:

  • 68% of respondents were interested or very interested in using their TV to shop.
  • 82% would be interested in purchasing products tied to their favorite shows.
  • 76% would also be interested in purchasing products or services directly from the commercial they’re watching. Of those, apparel and entertainment products demonstrated the highest interest followed by food, beauty, health/wellness, travel and autos.
  • In addition to completing purchases, 30% of respondents would be interested in saving products to a wish list, 25% would be interested sharing products info on Facebook and 17% would be willing to participate in a game for product discounts and promotions.

Pameodeon SmartTV app: The first Greek TV-commerce app, offering a Video-on-Demand service

An interesting case which incorporates the capabilities of TV-commerce, is the Shop TV application which is available from Samsung SmartTV. Shop TV is an online marketplace in the form of a SmartTV app that features merchandise from TV shows and networks as well as from large retailers and brands. The Shop TV requires viewers to opt-in and shop for products as viewed in TV on a 24/7 basis. A unique link is then forwarded to the user’s handset. The user follows the link to buy the product from the m-shop. Alternatively, a unique link is forwarded to the user’s email including a link to buy the product from the e-shop. Another option is using a unique code already obtained by the e/m-shop. Users can also create a wish list of their desired products. In addition to completing transactions, this functionality will allow viewers to receive targeted offers or request additional information, all via the remote control.
